Founded in 1908, The Children's Hospital (TCH) is a 250-bed freestanding children's hospital which serves as the region's pediatric tertiary care center.  It is also the primary training site for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Consistently ranked as one of the best children's hospitals in America by the "U.S. News and World Report", TCH is the regional pediatric level I trauma center for the Rocky Mountain region. In addition, TCH houses the Regional Pediatric Burn Center and the region's largest Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Children's Hospital has a strong commitment to research into childhood disease as well as a sincere interest in medical training. This focus on education is reflected by the number of pediatric, family medicine, surgery, and emergency medicine residents who train at The Children's Hospital.

The Children's Hospital Emergency Department sees over 45,000 patients annually. All pediatric emergency medicine physicians are boarded in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine and full-time faculty of the University of Colorado Health Science Centers in the Department of Pediatrics. A fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at TCH also trains 1-2 fellows per year.

The Children's Hospital ED was completely renovated in 1997 and includes a 6-bed Observation Unit as well as a separate area for patients with minor acute illnesses. TCH is currently in the process of building a new, state of the art, hospital in Aurora, Colorado adjacent to the new University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Fitzsimmons Campus. Jointly, this collaboration will produce and amazing 21st century medical campus, aimed at providing state of the art care to critically ill adult and pediatric patients from the Rocky Mountain region.

The Children's Hospital ED represents a high volume pediatric emergency experience in which Emergency Medicine residents direct resuscitations and manage acutely ill children.
