Residency Application

Every academic year, we match fourteen EM1 residents.  We participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application deadline is November 8 of each year.  Hard copy applications cannot be considered.  We currently have no unexpected vacancies in the residency and all of our applicant positions are committed through ERAS and the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).  Please refer to our FAQ's section if you have specific questions regarding the application process.

Prior to the deadline, we require:

  • The Common Application Form (CAF)
  • The Dean's Letter
  • Official Medical School Transcript
  • Three or Four Letters of Recommendation from Clinical Academic Faculty (any discipline) or Practicing Emergency Physicians
  • USMLE Step 1 Transcript (We will not accept other board scores in place of the USMLE)
  • Letters from Previous Program Directors (for applicants with previous post graduate medical training)

Any publications listed in your application must comply with the Council of Residency Directors for Emergency Medicine (CORD-EM) and the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA) definitions and guidelines. Qualified applicants will be invited for interviews based on the date of their original ERAS CAF application. A waiting list may be used.Interviews are commonly offered in mid-November.

Although not a vacation week, a new addition in 2007 is a 1 week "reading block" per year for EM2-4, during which the resident covers sick call but has no other clinical responsibilities.  This week's purpose is to give the residents dedicated time for targeted study and to work on writing/research projects.

Medical Student Elective

Medical students are welcome to rotate at Denver Health to gain a broad exposure to our residency program.  This rotation, however, is not required to gain acceptance to our residency.  Click here to learn more about the medical student elective.
